Marin Theatre is currently presenting the West Coast Premiere of The Gift of Nothing, a warm-hearted musical based on Patrick McDonnell’s beloved children’s book of the same name. Family-friendly theater experiences that truly work for all ages are rare, but this one succeeds. I brought my 2- and 7-year-old, and both were completely captivated by the characters and music. My 7-year-old especially loved the performance of Mooch and has not stopped singing “Pink socks!”—a lyric from one of the show’s songs that clearly made a lasting impression.
This production is especially meaningful, as it is only the second time the musical has ever been staged and coincides with the 20th anniversary of the original book’s publication. The story follows Mooch (Jordan Covington) as they search for the perfect present for their best friend, Earl (Amanda Le Nguyen), only to discover that the greatest gift isn’t something you can wrap—it’s presence, friendship, and togetherness. Playful songs and gentle humor deliver a touching message about imagination and social connection that resonates with both children and adults. There are also interactive moments with the audience, such as inviting them to call out their pets’ names and guiding everyone to close their eyes in a shared experience that helps illustrate what the “gift of nothing” truly means.
Marin Theatre also enhances the experience with special events tied to select performances. At our show, we were able to meet author Patrick McDonnell and have a book signed by him! The production is presented in partnership with Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, which will host an on-site adoption event at the theatre on Sunday, December 21, from 12–3 PM—a perfect fit for a story rooted in compassion and care.
This production runs December 13–23, 2025, at Marin Theatre, 397 Miller Avenue, Mill Valley, with tickets ranging from $25–$44. Copies of The Gift of Nothing will be available for purchase at the theatre, alongside the newly released companion book, The Gift of Everything. Families can also receive 10% off tickets with promo code GIFT10.
