Into the Beautiful North at Central Works

Central Works’ closes its 2016 season with new play, “Into the Beautiful North”, written by nationally known playwright Karen Zacarías and based on the novel by Pulitzer Prize finalist Luis Alberto Urrea. The script is inspired by the classic Hollywood western “The Magnificent Seven,” which was adapted from Kurosawa’s, “The Seven Samurai.” With the multitude of theatre choices in the Bay Area it’s hard to find one that illustrates the life of Latinos. This one fills that void, at least for a short term.

Gutenberg! The Musical!

The famously funny improv and sketch comedy troupe, The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, created and performed Gutenberg! The Musical!, a silly comedy about two writers who dream up what they believe to be the best musical ever written in history. The show has gone on to win dozens of awards and has been performed off-Broadway for years. The musical comedy is now making waves in San Diego. Produced by the Backyard Renaissance Theater Company, a group whose motto is “art to the gut,” Gutenberg! The Musical! certainly provides that feeling to audiences. Continue reading »

The newly formed theatre organization, BAY AREA MUSICALS! is closing its inaugural season with multiple Tony Award winning play, La Cage Aux Folles. The show written by Harvey Fierstein (book) and Jerry Herman (music and lyrics) revolves around Georges (Clay David), the owner of Saint-Tropez drag cabaret “La Cage aux Folles”, his lover Albin (Michael RJ Campbell) who is also the clubs headliner as Zaza, and his son Jean-Michel (Jack O’Reilly) who’s recently announced his engagement to Anne Dindon (Bessie Zolno), daughter of hypocrite politician Edouard Dindon (Cameron Weston). The Greatest Monkey Show on Earth presented by Antic in a Drain (as Artist in Residence at Kinetic Arts Center) will make you laugh at times and really uncomfortable the rest. Maitresse Magnificent (Amelia Van Brunt) introduces the audience to Charles the Chimp (Ross Travis). He’s a good little monkey that’s expected to perform on cue for treats. Aubergine, playing at Berkeley Rep is full of life lessons in hope, love, forgiveness and loss. Death is the inevitable finale we will all face one day but living is full of complexities that we can’t deter from regardless of knowing what our fate will be. Ray (Tim Kang) has to face the fact that his father is going to die after being placed in hospice care. A fact he ignored until his caretaker Lucien (Tyrone Mitchell Henderson) said the word hospice out loud, which is when patients are released from the hospital to live out their last days at home. “Swan Lake” presented by the San Francisco Ballet is playing at the War Memorial Opera House until February 28. The company performed the first American production of Swan Lake in 1940, this version is choreographed by Helgi Tomasson. He choreographed his first production of Swan Lake for SF Ballet in 1988 and in 2009, he created a new version. This is his first time returning since 2010. Continue reading »
