It might not be Yosemite, but Los Peñasquitos (Spanish for “little cliffs”) Canyon Preserve in San Diego offers its own kind of beauty, with plenty of scenic trails to explore. It lies between Rancho Peñasquitos and Sorrento Hills to the north and Mira Mesa to the south. One of the best ways to experience this 4,000-acre slice of suburban wilderness is on a moderate 7-mile (round-trip) mountain bike ride. The well-marked, dog-friendly, multi-use hard-packed trail begins at the main entrance and winds through peaceful meadows, groves of sycamore trees, and stretches of chaparral.
There aren’t many elevation changes, making it ideal for a leisurely walk or a smooth ride—especially for beginner mountain bikers like us. About three miles in, you’ll come across one of the trail’s highlights: a waterfall gently cascading over volcanic rocks. To be fair, it’s more of a stream than a dramatic waterfall, but we still enjoyed soaking our feet in the refreshingly cold water after the ride.
A few things to remember before heading out: bring plenty of water, sunblock, and maybe a hat—it gets hot out there, and much of the trail is exposed with limited shade. Just a 20-minute drive from Hillcrest, it’s a perfect spot for a quick escape into nature without leaving the city behind.
PLEASE NOTE: Trails may be closed due to flooding or damage. For up-to-date trail status, call the Park Ranger Office at 858-538-8066.
