Cirque Du Soleil Brings Its First Ice Show, CRYSTAL, to San Jose’s SAP Center

CRYSTAL—Cirque du Soleil’s 42nd production and first-ever experience on ice—has arrived in San Jose’s SAP Center until April 1, 2018.

COURTSHIPIn typical Cirque fashion, the show is innovative, visually stunning, funny, and full of imaginative scenarios that only a Cirque show can take you through. Artists and skaters perform acrobatics on the ice and in the air, seamlessly combining multiple disciplines to take the audience into the dream world conjured up by the show’s main character, Crystal (Nobahar Dadui).

Crystal finds herself feeling the weight of the mundane life and dreaming of breaking away, “I don’t belong here, I want to live in a book…”. She tells herself, “skate away from them all, find the one inside”, and then begins a magical world of synchronized skating, freestyle, figure, and extreme skating combined with swinging trapeze, aerial straps and hand to hand acts. She goes through a self-reflection that leads her to a feeling of freedom and empowerment. The acrobats push their limits and fly through the air demonstrating a weightlessness one can only feel when open to taking risks.

01_TEMPETE-0265The show has something for everyone. There are little amusements like fake falls to make people laugh, incredible stunts for the thrill seekers, and the colorful and musical representations for the artists and dreamers. In the end Crystal breaks through the ice and resurfaces, “everythng feels real until you realize you’re dreaming.”

Another key feature of Cirque shows is their dedication to warming up the audience. Prior to show time they take a more creative approach to getting your attention than just blinking the house lights on and off. For Crystal, this warm up included snow ball fights on stage and within the audience. This is what makes Cirque enjoyable by many. Their creative approach caters to their specific audience, in this production it’s inclusive to all ages and tastes.

CRYSTAL – A Breakthrough Ice Experience | Cirque du Soleil

If you’re into meek, kitsch, and self-deprecating work, you’ll hit the jackpot at The Contemporary Jewish Museum’s current exhibition, Cary Leibowitz: Museum Show. Although Leibowitz’s work has been included in approximately one hundred and fifty group exhibitions and featured in nearly forty solo exhibitions, this is his first wide-ranging and solo museum exhibition. People see his expression of insecurities and social skepticism as an unveiling of an identity one usually keys away from the public eye. He became known in the early 1990’s as “Candyass”.anapines8 Leibowitz

The work seems to celebrate ineptitude caused by depression or social deprivation but it can also be seen as a critique of pretentiousness. It all depends on the viewer provoking the age-old question, “What is art?” and who defines it. Is it art because the museum says so? He certainly explores the vanity of it all in many of his pieces in not-so-subtle ways. One piece has modern art written on it and prices slashed down to 5cents.

anapines13 Leibowitz

It’s sarcastic and also reminiscent of the, “I’m rubber you’re glue, whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you!” days of elementary school. One of his canvasses has only two words; “Fat and Ugly” divided by a line and painted in green on a yellow canvas. He’s taking hurtful words and owning it.

anapines5 Leibowitz

One can come to several conclusions about the artist when viewing the exhibit. In viewing the work you might think he’s depressed and holed up at home sprawling, “I hate myself” on cheap china all day but then you think, he has an art show at a museum, with work my kid might be able to re-produce. Yeah, he’s not a loser, pretty funny, and some might say, genius.

The exhibition features nearly 350 original artworks and multiples from 1987 to the present. You can catch it now until June 25, 2017. Go judge for yourself and leave a note, your words might end up in his next show.

How to Be Single – Film Review

HTBS6In the film How to Be Single, directed by Christian Ditter and based on the novel of the same name by Liz Tuccillo, a group of women struggle to find love in New York City. Being single can be one of the best experiences of someone’s life and for anyone that is single the best advice I can give is to enjoy it while it lasts. Now for the person who is single, that is probably the last thing they want to hear from their smug friends in long-term relationships or their happily married ones. Instead, being single can feel really lonesome, depressing (literally everyone is in a relationship or at least it feels like that), and sometimes the constant disappointment of meeting another douchey person can be too much to handle. The story revolves around some of those situations as well as what some go to, to not be single.

The main character, Alice (Dakota Johnson); is the type of girl who has always been in a relationship, so when she finds herself suddenly single she is clueless about how to proceed with dating. Cue her friend Robin (Rebel Wilson) who completely enjoys being single and knows all the ins-and-outs of dating in the Big Apple. She teaches Alice a thing or two about navigating a world filled with mixed messages sent via text (never send a guy an emoji right after you meet him, it screams desperation) and how to talk to guys at crowded bars.

HTBS3Alice lives with her older sister Meg (Leslie Mann), an overworked OB/GYN who rarely has time to sleep let alone date. She goes on a mission to have a baby of her own via a sperm donor, never really thinking she would meet someone. When Ken (Jake Lacy) introduces himself to her at a work party, sparks fly and she cannot deny that she likes this much younger dude.

Then there is Lucy (Alison Brie), the single girl who has gone so far as to create an algorithm to try to find the perfect match on a dating site. She has a horrible WIFI connection in her home, so she sets up shop with her laptop and sweat pants at the local bar downstairs where Tom (Anders Holm), the snarky bartender and experienced lothario tries to give her dating advice.

HTBS2All the meantime, Alice remains stuck between sort of still liking her ex Josh (Nicholas Braun) and meeting interesting new men like David (Damon Wayans Jr.), the single dad who is a total sweetheart. Alice must learn how to love herself before anyone else can come into her life and take pleasure in being a party of one.

I thought the film had a lot of funny moments in it, Johnson was great as the awkward, yet totally cute single gal and of course Wilson played her part to perfection and gave the film its most comical moments. Part of me is kind of sick of seeing Wilson play the same persona, but we can’t deny that she plays it well and she embraces every inch of her wackiness which I totally love.

HTBS4Mann was funny and probably had some of my favorite moments in the film like when Jake sees her shopping for baby items, he has no idea she’s pregnant and she totally freaks out. That was pretty funny and I enjoyed the banter between Brie and Holm. He is slowly coming out of his Workaholics persona and turning into a bona fide actor.
I felt that at many times this film was trying so hard to be like Sex and the City, but I guess anytime you put single women in a film set in New York City it’s difficult not to make that comparison. I liked this movie more than the annoying show Girls, which again gives us the same NYC scenario; in fact I would have thoroughly enjoyed this as a series on HBO. I think it would be really promising and I would love to see many of these characters shelled out a bit more.

This is a perfect film to see with your girl friends as it just oozes female estrogen in every scene. It could also be a fun date night movie to drag your significant other to or maybe a first date, although that might result in you staying single. But hey, it doesn’t matter because being single is liberating, exciting, and a great state of mind to be in at any age.

Written by: Abby Kohn (screenplay), Marc Silverstein (screenplay), Dana Fox (screenplay), Liz Tuccillo (book)

Steve Harvey Crowns Wrong Miss Universe

On Sunday night during the Miss Universe event host Steve Harvey mistakenly crowned Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez-Arévalo, the winner of the event. He realized his mistake in the moment leading to one of the most awkward TV moments of 2015. The winner from the Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, stood in shock as the announcement was made. All eyes were on Gutiérrez’s reaction as many imagined the humiliation of having something taken away from you within seconds and worse; the whole word has access to see it.

Harvey is known for making fun of people so it’s interesting to see him on the other side of the fence this time. Endless memes hit the web poking fun at the snafu. He has apologized several times and with his talk show, books, comedy, and Family Feud hosting gig, he’s sure to be forgiven but the moment will definitely not be forgotten anytime soon. If you’re one of the few people who have no idea what happened, check out the video below our top ten memes.

Baby Meets Cat For First Time

Baby Can't Stop Smiling At CatCats need to be prepared for a new baby prior to the little bundle’s arrival. Cats are mostly creatures of habit and tend not to do well with change. Here are a few tips to help make the introduction a safe and loving exchange. May your baby be all smiles like the baby in the video below.

  • Play baby sounds so they get use to it, especially crying noises.
  • Let them explore and investigate the baby’s furniture at least a few weeks before arrival. Probably a good idea with or without a pet to set up the nursery in advance!
  • After they’re done investigating the new space, decide whether or not the room will be off limits and train accordingly.cute cat
  • Associate them with your potential new schedule and the smells that will accompany baby. Use positive reinforcement rewards so they know this change is good and they have nothing to fear.
  • Don’t spoil them prior to baby’s arrival no matter how tempting. It’s inevitable that you won’t be able to pay them the same amount of attention when baby arrives. This will confuse your pet and result in jealousy and erratic behavior.
  • Schedule one-on-one time with them so they don’t feel neglected and end up acting out. This includes playtime, feeding time, and cleaning up their litter.Cat Baby on Swing
  • Create a safe space so that they can have privacy when friends, neighbors and family members start to trickle in to get a glimpse at the new bundle of joy.
  • If they go near baby, don’t panic. They want to smell baby the way they do when they meet any new human. Baby is no different than an adult human to them. This gentle response deserves a reward.
  • Get them acquainted with the way babies investigate. Babies tend to poke, pinch, tap, and grab their tail gently. Simultaneously help baby also learn to play mindfully, so that they don’t hurt your pet, as they grow stronger.
  • Don’t forget to get them a nail trim so that they don’t accidentally scratch baby while trying to get to know them.My baby
